What actually has to happen, in what order, from the week before you land to the end of the first term. Including the part that decides whether the family stays, which is on nobody's checklist.
Two things belong in this window and almost nothing else does. The school conversation, because places are finite and the calendar does not move for you. And a housing shortlist narrowed to somewhere you can view in two mornings rather than three weekends.
Everything else that people try to do from abroad, they do badly. Bank accounts, phone lines and residency steps mostly cannot start until you are physically here and have documents in hand. Trying to run them early produces a lot of correspondence and no progress.
The one exception worth the effort: get documents legalised before you travel. Degree certificates, marriage certificates and birth certificates all get asked for, and getting them attested from Riyadh after the fact is slow and avoidable.
View compounds back to back. Two mornings, four or five places, in one stretch. Comparing across three separate weekends is how people end up remembering the view from the last one rather than the trade-offs across all of them.
Sign and register the lease. The registered lease is a dependency for more things than anyone expects, so the sooner it exists the sooner everything behind it can start.
Begin the residency process. Medical, biometrics and the residency permit run on their own timeline and it is not a fast one. Start it the week you arrive rather than the week you feel settled.
Do not buy a car this week. You do not yet know where you will drive.
Bank account. Depends on the residency permit, which depends on the medical, which depends on you being here. This is the chain that decides the pace of the first month and it cannot be shortened by urgency, only by having every document ready the first time.
Driving licence. Conversion from some licences is straightforward; others require a test. Check which applies to yours early, because the answer changes how you plan transport for the first quarter.
Mobile and internet. Both need the residency permit. The compound usually handles internet.
Schools. If term has started, the children are already in. If it has not, use this window for uniform, transport registration and the practical things that become urgent in the last week of August.
Transport. Now decide. Lease, buy, or a driver, informed by four weeks of actually making the drives rather than by a map.
By week five the logistics are largely done and this is where most relocation programmes end. It is also where the failures begin, because the question stops being whether the family is set up and becomes whether the family is all right.
The person who gave up a career to come is the one to watch. They have no office, no colleagues and no structure, in a city whose working week starts on Sunday, and the first month was busy enough to disguise it. Week five is when the quiet starts.
Put things in the diary deliberately. Introductions to people in a comparable situation. Something regular rather than one-off, because a standing commitment builds a week and a single coffee does not. A reason to leave the compound that is not an errand.
This is not a soft concern. Across our cases it is the single best predictor of whether a household is still here in a year, and it costs less than one month of the rent that was negotiated so carefully in week one.
Shipping everything. Air freight the things that make the first fortnight feel normal and sea freight the rest, or replace it. Sea freight arrives in a window measured in months and you will have bought half of it by then.
Deciding the district from abroad. Every family arrives with a district in mind, recommended by somebody whose circumstances differ from theirs in a way neither of them has noticed.
Committing to a three-year housing decision in week one when the job may relocate you inside the city. Annual leases are the norm here for a reason, and one year is a perfectly respectable first decision.
